Park + Vine second Midwest store to carry Hudson Valley Seed Library

Park + Vine is the first store to carry Hudson Valley Seed Library seeds in the Tri-state. The Art Packs unfold into a flower shape, and are printed on recycled paper with vegetable-based inks. Seeds are non-GMO, heirloom and sourced from small, independently-owned farms that have sustainable, responsible growing and labor practices. Seeds cannot be traced to bio-tech companies such as Monsanto. Each pack is $3.75.

Hudson Valley Seed Libary

Hudson Valley Seed Libary

The company is farm-based, so they grow some of their seeds themselves and process all those seeds by hand. They share tips on how to grow and save seeds on their Seeder’s Digest blog and Facebook page.

The Seed Library started in a public library in the Hudson Valley in 2004, letting library patrons “check out” seeds in the spring and return saved seeds at the end of the season. In 2008, they carried over this concept into their business plan and still encourage customers to save seeds and return them for discounts. Ken Greene and Doug Muller run the Seed Library from their farm in Accord, New York, complete with homemade composting toilets and a solar food dehydrator. The farm at the Seed Library uses organic growing practices and vegetarian-fed, mostly bike-riding labor!

Everything from printing, shipping boxes, and labels to compost and organic fertilizers come from small, mostly family-owned businesses located as close to their farm as possible. Art Packs are created from artwork submitted by artists in the Hudson Valley area. Although seeds and artwork are local to New York, the Seed Library’s mission is national in scope, encouraging communities everywhere to source seeds from responsible seed houses and learn how to save them. The Seed Library hosts art openings and seed swaps to inspire people to exchange seeds and share our enthusiasm for growing heirloom vegetables and flowers. In 2011, Seed Library donated more than 650 packs of seeds to school or community garden projects!
