All-women farmers’ market, a silent bike ride

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

There are two events taking place Wednesday, May 20 that capture our imagination: a new farmers’ market featuring only women farmers and a bike ride honoring injured and fallen bicyclists.

First up is the new Earth Mother Market at the Stables Building, 1038 S. Ft. Thomas, in Ft. Thomas. The market is open 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday (rain or shine) May 20 through October. All market members are either “certified organic,” “certified naturally grown,” and women. The lovely Gretchen Vaughn of Greensleeves Farm and Vicky Tewes of Thistlehair Farm are two of the market’s main organizers. Hail to these small farmers for bringing fresh produce to our kitchen tables and local restaurants.

Starting at 6:30 p.m. is the quiet, slow-paced Ride of Silence. It’s a worldwide event that honors bicyclists injured and killed on public roadways. The ride departs from three different locations at 6:30 p.m. and makes a stop at Fountain Square for a ceremony at 7:30 p.m. After the ceremony, cyclists continue to another location.

Now, a Web site for local farmers’ markets

More and more people agree: Eating local produce is best. Ingesting foods grown close to home is the smartest and freshest way to break the unhealthy food chain.

Park + Vine customer and Northside resident Brook Westheimer just made it easier to find the best in fresh produce at area farmers’ markets with the new Web site Cincinnati Farmers’ Markets. Brooke’s Web site provides “both an easy resource for Cincinnati residents to find the closest farmers’ market, and as an opportunity for less connected markets to gain an internet presence.” Each market gets a description, hours and dates of operation, contact information, and a map.

Speaking of farmers’ markets, organizers of the Hyde Park Farmers’ Market are seeking a market manager:

An energetic person who’s passionate about locally and sustainably grown food, would be a great candidate for our Market Manager. The market runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Sunday June through October. The manager is there to make sure the market runs smoothly, put out signage, sell water and market bags, provide information, run the “market booth” displaying literature, assist with special programs such as tastings, and help connect customers with vendors. This is a paid position. Contact Mary Ida Compton at maryida[at]fuse[dot]net or 513-561-1205.
